50 Conversation Starters for Engaging Conversation in 2023

2023 has arrived! It can sometimes be challenging to identify what your New Year’s resolution should be. If you cannot think of any resolution for this new year, here is a suggestion - create a plan on how you can effectively communicate with other people and create engaging conversations in 2023.

It might sound complex, but with the right conversation starters in mind, you can improve relationships, build rapport with colleagues, make new friends, and feel prepared when meeting new people!

It can be extremely hard to initiate a conversation with someone you barely know, and may sometimes feel unnatural. For most people, this can be one of the most awkward, and overwhelming situations they may encounter.  Indeed, we might find “small talk” unbearable or undesirable. Rather than starting out the conversation about the weather, season, or time, let’s learn to go that one step further…nothing beats a good, meaningful, and old-fashioned conversation, right? Start initiating an engaging conversation that will avoid either of you feeling bored. Here are 50 effective conversation starters to start using now…

When you meet an acquaintance in public or at a social event:

No doubt, all the questions are guaranteed to spark engaging conversations. Once you use these conversation starters, you are more likely to avoid dull “small talk” that only captures "yes" or "no" responses.

Finally, it’s best to avoid discussing topics such as religion, politics, finance, appearance, age, gossip and offensive jokes or sexual topics that might make others feel uncomfortable.
